Walk and talk on the village walking group

Walk and talk on the village walking group

Every Tuesday morning, the resident-led Arvida Copper Crest walking group laces up their shoes and sets out for an hour of fresh air, laughter, and lively conversation.

With up to sixteen walkers, this cheerful bunch stroll together across flat routes in the Pyes Pa area near their retirement village.

“Our walks are often around the Lakes area and recently the group went down Miles Lane, off Cambridge Road, so the could walk alongside the Wairoa River,” says Gael Eastwood who has been in the group for ten years.

Another favourite walk is Carmichael Reserve, offering a variety of views for everyone to enjoy. To keep things moving at a comfortable pace, the group splits into fast, medium, and slower walkers. “When we go round the Lakes, we wait to cross altogether on Kennedy Road, which is quite a busy road,” explains Gael. Safety first where no one is left behind.

One of the group’s favourite traditions is their post-walk café visit. After an hour of exercise from 9am to 10am, everyone heads off for morning tea.

More than just fitness, the walking group has become a source of flexibility, fun, and friendship. “Walking regularly prevents falls because you’re going heel toe, heel toe -none of us shuffle,” Gael says proudly. The constant chatter along the way makes the experience even more memorable.

“Just getting out and going to areas we don’t know is great. We’re not from Tauranga so it’s helped us to get to know the area,” explains Judy Stichbury.

So whether it’s a brisk stroll or simply a good chat, the Arvida Copper Crest walking group is building a strong, resident-led retirement community… one step at a time.
